Prof.Fritz ter Wey

Professor and Head of the choral conducting and choral education department at the Detmold University of Music

Fritz ter Wey was born in Aachen in 1943 and attended the Kaiser-Karls-Gymnasium there. After graduating from high school, he studied school music, choir and orchestra conducting at the University of Music and Dance (HfMT) in Cologne, and at the same time studied German at the RWTH Aachen. From 1970 to 1995 he worked as a teacher of German and music at various high schools in the Aachen area.

In 1966 he founded the vocal ensemble Der Junge Chor Aachen, of which he is still the musical director today. From 1988 to 1994 he directed the choir and orchestra of the Collegium Musicum of the RWTH Aachen. Other choirs that he founded and continues to direct today are Modus Novus (since 1989) and AVE (since 2014). In 1994 he was appointed professor of choral conducting at the Detmold University of Music and remained so until his retirement in 2009.

 

In addition to his work as an active choir director, he co-founded the International Choral Biennale in 2009 and has been a member of the festival's artistic management since then. He is also a member of the Music Council of the Choral Association of North Rhine-Westphalia, where he acts as an artistic advisor (coach) to numerous national and international choir ensembles.

He is also the author of the book “Basic Course in Choral Conducting” and the composer of numerous choral works. He is currently working as a lecturer in the field of training choir conductors in amateur choirs.
